Title : Simulation in surgery
Introduction/Background:
Filariasis is endemic in Africa and leads to complications including Hydrocele ,lymhoedema of limbs and genitals, lymph scrotum, and necrotic testis. To successfulyy manage the hydroceles The FASTT manequine was ustilised to train surgeons in endemic countries before they engaged in live surgeries. This prevents complications of the surgery
Surgical simulation offers the opportunity for trainees to practise their surgical skills prior to engaging in live surgery, allowing detailed feedback and objective assessment of their performance. This enables better patient safety and standards of care. Mistakes made on the simulator can easily be corrected during live surgery.
Methods:
Training of surgeons in filarial hydrocelectomy using the FASTT(Filaricele Anatomical Surgical Task Trainer) Manequine in lymphatic filariasis endemic countries.
Results:
Over 50 surgeons trained were trained in10 countries in africa proved a very successful way of training surgeons with the simulator before they engage in live surgeries.Preventing post operative complications
Conclusion:
Utilising the FASTT manequine its possible to train surgeons in filarial endemic regions to practice filarial hydrocelectomy successfully devoid of complicatiopns.Complications of hydrocelectomy include infection, haemmorhage ,Haematoma and necrosis.
