Abstract:

Introduction: Cote d'Ivoire, a country in Sub-Saharan Africa, recorded an increase in confirmed cases of measles of 64.85% in 2020 compared to 2019 Analysis of measles surveillance data in the Toulepleu health district showed weaknesses in the quality of the data collected. The objective of our study was to evaluate the epidemiological surveillance system for measles in the health district of Toulepleu.

Methods: The measles surveillance system was evaluated according to CDC Atlanta 2021 and WHO guidelines. Attributes such as simplicity, acceptability, representativeness, data quality, sensitivity and usefulness were assessed. The data were collected by administering a questionnaire from the staff in charge of epidemiological surveillance at the level of the health centers and the health district. A document review of surveillance tools for the period 2022-2024 was conducted. The data collected was captured and analyzed with the Epi Info 7.2.1.0 software. The target for each indicator was 80%.

Results: 21 people were interviewed. Scores were 100%, 100%, and 90.5% respectively for usefulness, simplicity, and acceptability. The proportion of agents who considered the system to be able to capture all cases was 63%. The proportion of notification forms correctly filled in was 46%. The proportion of centres that reported was 72%.

Conclusion: The surveillance system of the Toulepleu Health District was useful, simple and acceptable. However, sensitivity, completeness and representativeness were considered to be below measles surveillance standards. It would be appropriate to maintain the continuous training of actors on epidemiological surveillance and on the management of its data.
